Extra Life: Play Games. Heal Kids.
Hello my fellow nerds!
The guys at The Goblin Gazette have an announcement to make, so I thought I would start it off on this post. Drum roll please…
We wanted to let all of you know that we will be raising money through Extra Life to support kids at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital here in our home town of St. Louis, Missouri! This has been a dream of ours since the beginning! Kingblunkers, Karthas, and I are incredibly excited and proud to be part of this and we are looking forward to grtting started!
But before I go any farther, let me explain what Extra Life is all about.
What is Extra Life?
Extra Life is a fundraising event that supports Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This event gathers thousands of gamers all over the world to raise money for kids in hospitals by gaming for 24 hours. All of the proceeds go directly to the hospitals. The funds are given to the hospitals as ‘unrestricted funds’, which means the hospital gets to decide where those funds go in order to best utilize the money for the kids. This might mean the money is spent on research, training, equipment, or uncompensated care for the little kiddos. Whatever the hospital needs most, that’s where the money goes.
What is Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals?
CMN Hospitals is a non-profit organization that raises funds and awareness for 170 children’s hospitals across the U.S. and Canada. The hospitals are then able to use the funds in a way that is best for the hospital and kids. Here is a link if you are interested in finding out more about Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals!
How do you raise the money?
So, you might be asking, ‘How are you going to raise the money?’ By doing what gamers do best… by gaming!
The big gaming event occurs on November 4th every year. On this day, gamers will play games for 24 hours. On the Extra Life website, the participant will set up an account before the event. During the event, or whenever you have time to donate, supporters can go to the fundraiser’s personal account page and donate money to support the 24 hours of gaming and give to a great cause!
Requirements or Restrictions?
What I love about Extra Life is that there really are no restrictions or requirements. Most of the games that people play are video games and most of the gaming occurs on November 4th.
However, if November 4th doesn’t work for you, no problem! You can have your own 24 hour event and promote it whenever you would like. Or maybe sports are more your thing, and that’s great! Gaming does not have to be limited to an Xbox or PC. You can play a game on your phone, play board games, go outside and play football. Or all of the above!
Or maybe 24 hours is a bit too much, and that’s fine too. You don’t have to game for 24 hours straight. As a matter of fact, you could take a nap, take a break for lunch, go to the bathroom, etc. Gaming over a few days adding up to 24 hours is also another option. Just game for the kids! You can even raise funds all year round if you feel called to do so! It is totally up to you!
There is no age limit for participating, and setting up an account is incredibly easy. You can set up an individual account, make a team account, or join another team. You do not have to pay a registration fee, but if you want the platinum account (and receive gifts like t-shirts and medals), it would cost only $15 to register.
If you are looking to donate, you can donate on the day of the event, or leading up to the event. If you know someone who has an account that will be participating, feel free to donate however much and whenever you’d like! For each person’s account, there will be a goal set for how much they want to raise. There is no penalty for not meeting that goal, so might as well go big and hope for the best! Every little bit helps these kids have a better life and a more normal childhood.
If you want to know more about Extra Life, here is a link to some of the frequently asked questions page on their website.
We will be gaming starting on November 3rd and finishing on the 4th of this year. We plan on gaming for 24 hours and we will be uploading streams and photos of our shenanigans during that time.
But, November is a long way away. From now until then, we plan on promoting and spreading the word about our event as much as possible. But we need your help! Any support would be awesome! If you want to donate to our page, here is a link to our account. We have set our goal at $250, but we hope to crush that! So please donate to our page to support us and for the kids! Your donation is tax-deductible and will make miracles happen for families who desperately need them. You can click the “Donate” button at the top of our page to make a safe and easy online donation.
For whatever reason, if you can’t donate money, we totally understand. No worries! But you could still be an incredible help to us by sharing and spreading the word about our 24 hour gaming event on November 4th. So let your friends and family know, share our site and our posts. We plan on doing a lot of promoting in the next couple of months, but we will need all the help we can get!
As a group, we have had the dream of joining Extra Life and gaming for a good cause for a while, and now that we feel we have a good following, we can finally start that dream! We are incredibly honored to support Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and are super excited to start giving back to the community!
From the guys at The Goblin Gazette, we are greatly honored to be part of this and would love your support in helping these kids have a better life! Thanks for reading and for all the support!
Peace and love,
Matt “Donoran” Fuhrmann
